Welcome, wonderful yuletide writer!

RL has been kicking me kind of hard this year, so I'm recycling most of my letter from last year. It's all still true, I swear. :)

I love this challenge. Yuletide has all too often been one of the brightest spots in my holiday season.I know I will love whatever you decide to write for me because anything even loosely related to my rather broad prompts is going to make me grin like a maniac when I open it! I am sorry that I kinda suck at requests and prompts, and I’m even sorrier that you, dear wonderful writer, must bear the brunt of this. However, I know how much fun it isn’t to get a list of requests with only sketchy details and to not be able to find anything more from my recipient... so here goes. Generalities are first followed by canon-specific stuff.

Things I love: good characterization; found families; big reveals (Merlin has magic! Superman is really Clark!); in-character cliche!fic (tropes are tropes for a reason!); working partnerships; developing trust; first times; defending a partner (or anyone, really); characters being believably excellent at what they do; smut that resonates emotionally (from mildly suggestive to downright filthy); power play / BDSM where trust is given; aftercare; and characters facing impossible choices but finding that they’re actually easy when it’s all said.

I love slash, but het can be a lot of fun too, as can completely platonic partnerships and growing families. I have a huge competency kink, especially when the BAMF!characters are still recognizably the characters I fell in love with in the first place. I love crossovers and believe that anything can be crossed with a little thought. If you do too, please feel free to cross within my requests (or with any fandom I’ve written, for that matter!).

I also have a fondness for ending the world. Bleakness can take my breath away when done well, but I’ll admit a strong preference for some hope mixed in with my despair. I think I mostly love how people come together in a crisis and that sense of starting fresh. I love dark fic that lets you see the light in at least a tiny corner. I’d be quite happy with a fic tagged yuleporn or crueltide; I’d also be happy with fluffy curtain fic if that’s where your muse takes you.

Things that don't tend to thrill me but seem to work for others: AUs (canon divergence is fine, but I don’t really crave knowing what any of them was like in high school or what kind of baristas they’d be); powerplay where harm is done in a real world relationship (think teacher/student, guardian/charge, boss/employee, etc, where the subby character puts up with it because they can’t get away, not because it’s working for them); and fics exploring the death or terminal illness affecting major characters (directly or through intimate acquaintance). However, any of these things can work for me if they’re well done and the subject in question is treated seriously. Honestly, the hardest limit I have? Don’t hurt the dog, cat, fish, whatever. If there’s an animal involved, that plot needs to end happily. (Not that animals are terribly likely in any of these fandoms, but, hey, I think Fitzroy could totally rock a cat.)

I don’t really have anything a lot more to say about the fandoms I requested directly than I did in my signup, but I tried. Apologies if the extra-optional details below sound familiar.

Blood Ties: Henry, Vicki, and Mike in any permutation is what this show is all about for me. I OT3 them so hard, and there’s so little fic for them... you’ll make me squee with any fic that simply has them all in it just being themselves. Since that isn’t terribly specific... I’d love something on the fallout from Henry biting Mike. I’d love Henry and Mike developing a friendship (or more!) and Vicki either getting jealous or thinking they’re going to kill each other when other types of physicality are really growing much more likely. I’d love Henry having to bite either/both of them to save them (I know the books do this but with Vicki, but an alternate version’d be great), or them having to hide and sustain Henry with their own blood for an extended time. I’d love Mike trying to adjust to being a PI and Vicki trying to adjust to having a real partner again while Henry meddles, or Mike and Henry bonding and bickering while getting Vicki out of trouble (serious or not). Or anything, really, I swear!

Almost Human: I had a wonderful story from Shrift last year, so I feel kind of guilty asking for more. However, I'm an acknowledged glutton when it comes to this kind of story... and I'm sure that you, dear Yuletide Writer, could choose to write me a story with the exact same plot summary and I would still twirl it in glee. Last year's notes follow below.

This fandom makes me crave cop tropes like I haven’t since my days in Sentinel fandom (yes, that long ago). Send them undercover in a club. Lock them in a closet plastered together while the bad guys posture. Explore how much more a relationship is frowned upon when it’s not just with your partner, it’s with your android partner. Have the entire station know they’re falling for each other before they do. Or, you know, write something completely different and non-slashy. I love watching totally platonic loyalty grow and be tested (successfully though, please! Partnership betrayal is only okay when it turns out to be falsely accused [and ends well] or was done for a world-saving kind of reason). I also love the unnominated Maldonado and Stahl, and seeing them be their BAMF selves would be excellent, too. Clueless!Kennex (never a stretch, really), and more-emotionally-perceptive-than-the-humans Dorian are always to be cherished. A day in the life of the station through the eyes of an MX-43 could be fun. Or let’s watch Rudy squirm after he accidentally releases some kind of sex pollen into the ventilation system for the squad room--or honesty pollen (see, it doesn’t have to be about sex!) so we can watch John squirm. Some wonderful non-trope idea your muse presents you with would be wonderful too, I swear. Just give me John and Dorian having each other’s backs and I’ll have an excellent Yuletide.

Burnt: This one's new to me this year, since I just watched the movie a few days ago. I found the glimpses we had into Adam and Reece's relationship fascinating, and I want more. Which is what I said in my signup, so I'm a lot of help, aren't I? It was that almost casual intimacy between people who acknowledge each other only as enemies... I'm a sucker for that every time, whether it's shared history or just flat respect, these two people who hate each other are also terrifically important--foundational, even--to each other.

Thank you, dear author. I wish you a wonderful Yule season! I know mine will be better for whatever your imagination bestows on me.

Placeholder!
Exciting things to come!
(Okay, things to come, I can promise at least that much!)

What do you mean, assignments went out?

Ack! Bad [livejournal.com profile] rivestra!

Life has not cooperated with me at all, and it's not showing any signs of doing so soon. I am so sorry, but I fear that last year's letter is going to have to do. The requested fandoms are different, but there's a bunch on general stuff at the top that should be at least a little useful. (ETA: At the bottom, there's a bit more if we matched on Almost Human--I did repeat one fandom after all!)

::Hangs head in shame::

I WILL LOVE ANYTHING YOU WRITE BECAUSE YOU ARE AWESOME. I BET YOU EVEN MANAGED TO WRITE A LETTER FOR YOUR WRITER!
(Seriously, I love this challenge, and I really will adore anything you write for me because it will be handcrafted for me, in the spirit of the season.)
rivestra: (yes)
Yuletide is revealed, too!
(Quite a while ago... I totally blanked on posting it here!)

Welcome, wonderful yuletide writer!

I love this challenge, and I know I will love whatever you decide to write for me because these fandoms all really need some love! Unfortunately, I suck at requests and prompts. I am very sorry that you, dear writer, must bear the brunt of that. However, I know how much fun it isn’t to get a list of requests with only sketchy details and to not be able to find anything more from my recipient... so here goes. Please think of these as extra-optional optional details and ignore at will.

This may get a bit babbley, so I'll tuck it under a cut. )

I should probably also post what I wrote for Yuletide, right? Since the reveal's long since past?

This year I wrote Blood Ties fic, which there should be a great deal more of in the world, damnit! If you haven't seen the show yet (or read the books, which also rock), what on earth are you waiting for?!?

Simple Arithmetic )
rivestra: (YuletideKitty)
OMFG.

The old Yule Goat, he loves me so.

I got Justified fic this year, and I was kinda disappointed earlier this week when I figured that was likely what I was getting because it’s so much harder to do well than either of my other two requests.

I need not have feared. So very much not. This story will add so much depth to my enjoyment of the show. She gave me a side of Tim I hadn’t thought of before, and now it’s totally head canon for me. She gave him to me in brilliant second person and she gave me some wonderful Raylan too, both drawn crystalline in spare lines and shades. It’s a short piece (about 1k), but powerful, managing to give me shining characterizations along with pain and pathos and comfort, and the kind of bravery that makes my head spin while others might not notice it at all.

How the author managed to hit on so many of my kinks (narrative and the other kind) is a true mystery, but I’d rather bask in the effects than solve it.

Go. Read with a gun in your mouth you speak only in vowels

And no, [livejournal.com profile] snarkgoddess, the title is from a Fight Club quote and, while I love it, it’s not entirely appropriate to the story, especially for someone with your buttons. The story will not even touch your suicide squick, I swear.

It's Yuletide!!!

I got my story, and it's adorable! Go spend the night with Walt and Johnny as they sip cocoa and name the ferocious beast that's taken over Johnny's back yard and is trying to move into their lives. Seriously! Walt's trust for Johnny here is so profound it just melts me into goo.

Go read Monsters, and please remember comments = love.
